Biography
Bob Sharer started carving decoys for his own use in hunting over 25 years ago. The early efforts were strictly rough blocks shaped and painted for the harsh treatment that functional decoys receive. Of the large number of these birds made, only a few survive; the rest having been destroyed or recarved into more decorative pieces.
In the late 1980”s he commenced carving decorative birds and life-like gunning class decoys and has taken lessons from a world class carver for several years. He first entered competitions in 1996 and since then has won over 50 ribbons and awards.
Significant achievements include;
Best of Show Gunning Division, Canadian National Sportsman’s Show 1997.
1st and 2nd Best of Show Gunning Division, Eastern Ontario Carving Championships 1997.
3rd place ribbon Gunning Division, Canadian Waterfowl Carving Competition Wye Marsh Midland Ont. 1998.
2nd place ribbons in both Gunning Division and Decorative Smoothie, Wye Marsh 1999.
1st, 2nd and 3rd place Gunning Division, Central Ontario Carving Competition Kitchener Wood Show March 2000.
Although for health reasons he has not actively followed the competitions in recent years he did receive awards in 2001 and won 1st and 3rd in 2003 at the Canadian National Wildfowl Championships.
Due to his numerous travels, he has not pursued competitive venues in recent years.
In addition to all types of waterfowl, Bob also makes competition quality songbirds and miniatures, many of which he mounts as trophies or presentation pieces.
A Banker for 39 years, Bob is now a retired senior citizen and primarily pursues his carving interests as an artistic and entertaining recreational activity. He does sell some of his productions to finance his hobby and has birds residing in virtually all provinces from Newfoundland to British Columbia
He has resided in King Township for over 20 Years moving to Nobleton in1985.
